This and That

I've been slacking on updating this and have been meaning to make a Bullshittin' In The Backyard 3 post... I'll get to it eventually. In the mean-time here's a quick random collection of photos from the last 6 months or so. Hover over the images for descriptions.

Bunny Hop Your Local Tweaker To Flat

The skate park tweakers under Kellogg normally clear out by 7:00am or so, but this guy kept the party going well into the afternoon having discussions with China, finding a good spot to light up, and dancing/rapping (?). Oblivious to anything going on around him, I decided to snag a photo of me bunny hopping over him to flat when he decided to set up shop in the bowl to fight the wind. Sadly some "hero" mom called the cops and he got hauled away before he came down and I could thank him for the hours of entertainment.

Thirty for Thirty

I made it to level 3 this year and decided to film thirty clips in 3 hours on the morning of my birthday. Otis and I got to the park around 7:30am just in time to hangout with all the crackheads. After they cleared out I set the camera on my camera bag and got started. Here's a short video of the results. Nothing too crazy since I'm terrified of knocking myself out when riding solo, but whatever; 30 clips is a lot of fucking work.

Here's to another 30 years on two wheels!

Fast & Loose

I recently went on a week long work trip to Ohio for some training and brought my copy of PBOD to finally dive into on the plane. I notoriously take months if not years to finish a novel. Not because it's a burden or anything; I love reading, but when I'm not at work I'm on the road a lot and am rarely the passenger, so it can be challenging to dedicate even a half hour to reading when I have a million other things going on when I'm not traveling.

I despise flying, but was looking forward to it this time around because this has been sitting on my coffee table as a coaster while I was finishing Orwells 1984 again. I won't spoil any details, but the book is fucking fantastic. This might be the fastest I've ever finished a book; just before reaching my layover in Chicago. The "Quality Content" list to the right of this page has a link to the Fast & Loose web store if you want to grab a copy, which I highly recommend. BMX needs more crews like this who aren't worried about gaining likes or followers, but more worried on chasing the never ending stoke and making memories with your friends.

Wineglass Ramps / Bullshittin' In The Backyard 2

The Wineglass Ramps, a brainchild of David McGinnis (@mcginnisdavid), is located in New Albany, KS. Dave's been building and riding ramps for over 30 years with no signs of slowing down. A true BMXer who is a hoot and is always happy to share his creation. Don't be afraid to hit him up to schedule a visit whether you BMX, Skate, Scoot, whatever. Pro tip: you'll score huge brownie point's if you bring him a pack of PBR as thanks.

The "compound" consists of two major ramps: the main ramp, and the vert ramp. The main ramp, which is only a few steps away from the house, is a staple in the mid-west BMX community. Before the recent rise of social media, the Wineglass Ramps were a thing of myth and legend. Few had made the journey and the stories they brought back of this oasis never seemed to match up to the limited content floating around. A lot of people called bullshit and couldn't believe such a thing could exist in the middle of no where Kansas. Jump forward to the early 2010's when we got shit ton of video and photographic proof; we were all believers. The Wineglass Ramps were now a BMX mecca.

The vert ramp is the most recent addition to the property. Tucked away on the corner lot across the alley sits Dave's old vert ramp. This was stored at his parents house for years, but is now back in his possession. What was supposed to be simple vert set-up has turned into a 40 ft wide, 11.5-ish tall vert ramp with a side add on consisting of a 16 ft tall "tombstone", a hefty box jump, and a 10 ft tall quarter. There are plans to bowl the box jump side in and to extend the vert ramp another 40 ft. Dave simply can't just leave shit alone. I swear he enjoys building the ramps more than he does riding, haha.

BSinthebackyard 2 Flyer

Jams and contests have brought people in from all over the country to this little slice of BMX heaven. After a few years hiatus of any "formal" gatherings, Dave and I decide it was time to coordinate a jam that focuses more on the comradery of BMX; "Bullshittin' In The Backyard" was born. Consisting of a weekend of BMX, skating, camping, live bands, prizes, and beer #BSinthebackyard is a guaranteed goodtime.

BSinthebackyard 2 was held September 15th, 2019. Unfortunately it was wet, cold, and slick but it didn't stop us from partying. Thank you to everyone who made it out and an even bigger thank you to the sponsors. Be sure to keep them in mind on your next BMX related purchase, we couldn't host this with out them. I can't wait for number 3, more details on that as it gets closer.

Take care!
-Josh
